Position description
Performs complex pre-analytic specimen receiving and processing using proper safety procedures in an accurate and ethical manner. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Specimen receipt, identification verification, processing and storage, using lab automation, processing and prepares any specimens to send-out to referral labs, prepares and packages all mail out kits, while maintaining positive patient identification throughout the process. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: may be responsible for maintaining and documenting send-out lab requisitions and billing, contributing and developing SOPs, training, assisting consultants with specimen collection and research, triages specimens according to level of complexity and patient history, may perform reagent preparation, and manage work unit supply inventory. Perform order entry/troubleshooting in the laboratory computer system and EMR, retrieves and verifies patient identification on specimens using appropriate sources, conducts resolution of pre-analytic specimen-related issues. May respond to a high volume of phone calls seeking laboratory testing/order information or add-ons. Must be able to learn and utilize multiple computer systems and have the ability to deal effectively with people in stressful situations. Works with minimal supervision and attention to detail is essential. Other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
Minimum of 2 years of specimen processing and handling, accessioning, phlebotomy, clinical lab, lab testing, and/or other relevant lab experience or Associate’s Degree in a health or science related field and 1 year experience in a clinical laboratory preferred.

Additional qualifications
Prior lab automation experience strong preferred. Associates or Bachelors degree in a health or science related fields is strongly preferred.
Must have an interest in working in a laboratory or interest in biologic or chemical sciences and the ability to carry out facility operations independently as well as in a team environment.
Must demonstrate organizational ability and follow directions accurately.
Demonstrates professional communication skills as well as proper technique and etiquette for answering the telephone and providing information.
Must be able to multi-task and be very detailed oriented, and perform troubleshooting and problem resolution.
Must demonstrate excellent computer skills, familiarity with EMRs and lab information systems, knowledge of medical terminology, and prior exposure to clinical medicine and/or pathology environments.
Must be able to accommodate scheduling adjustments, off-shifts, holiday, and weekend work assignments.
