As a key member of the executive team the Chief Risk Officer plays a critical role in the governance and leadership related to risks and opportunities specific to Mayo Clinic. The chief risk officer reports to the chief administrative officer and oversees Mayo Clinic’s overall risk management efforts. This includes oversight of the Integrity and Compliance Office, Internal Audit Services, Enterprise Risk Management, the Credit Card Protection Office, and Global Security. Direct reports include the chief audit officer, chief compliance officer, director of investigations and legal discovery, chief security officer and manager of enterprise risk management. This role develops and coordinates enterprise risk management structure and implements operational and financial risk management strategies with the goal of protecting existing businesses from adverse risk in addition to the risks associated with the implementation of new business opportunities.

Mayo Clinic has far more complexity and scale than a typical academic medical center and the candidate should possess knowledge and understanding of the practice, research, education as well as international, Mayo Clinic Platform, Mayo Collaborative Services and Center for Digital Health. The successful candidate must demonstrate a proven record of identifying and implementing creative solutions to vexing problems with an eye of how getting to yes with appropriate safeguards. Experience in healthcare services is preferred, but not required for this position. Highly intelligent self-starter with strong influencing and collaboration skills.

Responsible for oversight and coordination of effective process, policies, and procedures for the risk management program through the coordinated efforts of risk functions and through activities for educating and training all levels of staff and business associates about the risk management program and their respective responsibilities in carrying out program provisions.

Independently leads various projects and activities simultaneously. This role serves as the objective point of contact for all risk related issues that affect the organization’s short- and long-term strategic plans and their operation and financial performance. This role must partner effectively with Business Development, Strategy, Legal, Information Technology and Security among many other areas to ensure Mayo Clinic approaches risk in a balanced but forward-facing posture.

Ensures the protection of corporate assets and reputation and advises management on the relative advantages/disadvantages of various courses of action to mitigate risk.

Develops and communicates to provide a perspective of all aspects of risks to Mayo Clinic Leadership, the Audit and Compliance Committee of the Board of Trustees and is responsible for using sound judgment to prioritize risks which could have the most material impact.

Maintains effective relationships with internal and external business partners, industry associations and regulatory authorities. The Chief has extensive collaboration with physician and administrative leaders throughout Mayo Clinic to enhance relationships and ensure successful operations of the risk management function.

Participates in institution-wide planning and decision-making; recommends to the Board of Governors new risk policies and/or amendments to existing policies and advises management of emerging risk and compliance issues and guides the organization in the establishment of controls and approaches to mitigate emerging risks.

Ideal Candidate ProfileEducational requirements include either a graduate degree or JD. Preferred certifications for this role might also include the following: CPA, CIA, CISA, or CHC (Certification of Healthcare Compliance). Extensive experience that provides perspective and understanding of the challenges and opportunities of a Mayo destination medical center, including experience in Mayo’s three shields. Preferred experience includes a minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience, including five years of experience leading a risk related practice with healthcare industry focus. Relevant experience could be obtained in health systems, payers and life sciences organizations given the diversity and complexity of the Mayo Clinic. Relevant leadership roles may vary with the individual but might include Chief Financial Officers, Chief Risk Officers, Chief Compliance Officers, and Chief Legal or Administrative Officers. Prior experience with major accounting, legal, or professional services firms is also a plus in evaluating backgrounds and experiences for this role.Broad knowledge of accounting, audit, compliance, information systems, and risk frameworks are important for this role, but a track record as a successful leader is far more important than deep content knowledge in any of the specific areas of responsibility. This executive leads/manages various teams, projects and activities simultaneously. The ability to communicate complex issues and concepts in a clear concise fashion is important for success in this role.A track record of leading, coordinating, and motivating a team to accomplish micro and enterprise-wide risk mitigation initiatives is critical for success in this role. Additionally, demonstrated ability to develop strong working relationships and partnerships with other senior leaders is important in this role as is the ability to successfully support governance decision making relative to risk factors.This leader will be capable of providing astute guidance and early warnings of risk, including the formation of practical and timely opinions, revisions and/or solutions.She/he must have the business savvy and interpersonal skills to function effectively in the distributed decision-making environment of a large system which includes practice, education and research services. In addition, she/he will have an appreciation for the cultural nuances of a large, not for profit, academic medical system and the importance of working with complex constituencies.Communicates effectively at all levels in the organization and embraces open communication and a spirit of collaboration and innovation. Articulate and poised with well-developed presentation skills, both verbal and written. Possessing executive presence and demeanor with skills to present complex information effectively at all levels of the organization is critical to success in the Mayo Clinic organization.Organizational RequirementsThe primary work location is Rochester, Minnesota.Travel is required to Mayo Clinic’s sites and other business-related venues.
